What is Copyright?

Copyright is a delicate and complicated issue than can be easily overlooked - it is so easy to put a hymn book or music book on the photocopier without really thinking about it. Yet, in the back of our minds, most of us know it is illegal to do so.

In the U.K, music and words written by living authors - or those who died less than 75 years ago - are copyright. In law they are someone’s property and anyone wanting to ‘copy’ it - by what ever means - needs the copyright owner's permission to do so. Sometimes a payment needs to be made to the copyright owner or publisher.

The music of Boyce & Stanley and other works published by cjm|music are covered by BOTH of the major UK licensing schemes:

CCLi
P. O. Box 1339
Eastbourne

Christian Copyright Licensing

Who can help?

1. Christian Copyright Licensing (CCL)
This covers Oxford University Press, Kevin Mayhew, Thank you music and many of the songwriters and publishers whose songs are perhaps more commonly used in Anglican, Free or Evangelical Churches. These songs are typically found in collections like Mission Praise, Songs of Fellowship or the Spring Harvest Song Book.

CCL has more than 140,000 songs on its growing database and they also offer a Music Reproduction Licence, which covers photocopying of certain songs from certain books.

This scheme is administrated by Decani Music. It covers much of the current repertoire of Liturgical Music. including the St Thomas More Group, GIA publications, McCrimmons, Oregon Catholic Press, Taizé and others whose works are used particularly - but not exclusively -in Catholic liturgy.

The Calamus licence will allow you to reproduce words and melody lines.

Both the CCL and Calamus copyright licensing scheme cover works published by cjm music - please remember to include the titles of our songs in your annual returns and song surveys.
